Deworming agents

Quest Plus gel - Moxidectin and Praziquantel combination to effectively rid your horse's intestinal system of bots, tapeworms, and stomach worms.  Available in individual syringes to deworm a horse weighing 1,250 pounds.  Cost $17.50 per syringe.

Equimax - Ivermectin and Praziquantel combination.  The spectrum of this product is similar to that of Quest Plus, bots, tapeworms and stomach worms.  Available in individual syringes to deworm a horse weighing 1,320 pounds.  Cost $17.50 per syringe.

Equell - Ivermectin paste in a palatable paste that is easily dispensed to the horse's oral cavity.  I have personally used this product frequently, and it is preferable as to ease of administration and very efficient in that the animals retain the paste once it is placed in the oral cavity.  This product and Equimax are from the same manufacturer, and they are comparable in ease of administration.   Cost $12.00 per syringe. 

Pro-Tal Paste - Pyrantel Pamoate paste in a palatable paste, with each syringe containing enough product to deworm a 1,200 pound horse.  This product is effective against stomach worms, and it is the drug of choice for pin worms.  It also has some efficacy against tapeworms, when used on 2 consecutive days.

Panacur Paste and Liquid - Panacur is packaged in a 10 percent paste and a 10 percent liquid suspension of the active ingredient, fenbendazole.  This product is an excellent choice for deworming young foals, due to the efficacy against ascarids and the safety of the product.  It is also the drug of choice when using a larvicidal dose against strongyle (blood worms) larval stages.  Panacur is available in one liter liquid suspension, which will deworm twenty 1,000 pound horses in a single dose regimen.  One liter of suspension will deworm four 1,000 pound horses at the larvicidal dosage, which is given over a five day period.  Panacur paste is available in single syringes that will deworm a 1,000 pound horse in a single dose, or in the 'Power Pac', which contains 5 syringes with a larvicidal daily dose for a !,250 pound horse.  One liter suspension of Panacur is $150, the Power Pac is $75.00, and individual syringes of paste are $9.00.

Strongid C 2X - This is a product that is fed daily, top dressed on the grain ration.  The active ingredient is pyrantel pamoate.  It is fed a a level that will kill parasite larval stages as the eggs hatch after ingestion by the horse, effectively eliminating the parasite before it gets a good start.  This is an excellent product for a growing foal or for a show horse that you want to keep in the peak of condition.  It is not effective for bot control or tapeworm control, so it is important to use products that are effective against these periodicaly.   Strongid C 2X is available in a 10 lb. pail or a 50 lb. bag.  Cost is $42.50 per 10 lbs., which will treat a 1,000 pound horse for about 80 days.
